Once you have registered a user name at any Wikia hosted community you may use the same login to access any other wiki community hosted by Wikia.
- After your first edit at this wiki your user page and your user_talk page are initialized and it is during this process that your user page is added to this category.
- You will receive an automated welcome message at your user_talk page
- Your user page will be given an initial layout which you are free to personalize or delete altogether
If you have not yet left a brief hello message at the Forum:Nautigals & buoys then hop over there now and do so. Even a "Hello world!" will do the trick.
If your name still does not appear in the list below and if you have not yet viewed your user-page then please go there now.
This will cause your user page to be added to this Members category.
Manage your Favorites[]
The Virtual Skipper Wiki uses the list of members in this category to implement a facility for managing your favorite list of boat models, skins, tracks ... indeed any wiki article can be added to your list of favorites.
- Go to Special:MyPage and find the section titled My favorite pages.
- Edit that section by pasting
{{My favorite pages}}
as the first line in the section and then preview and save your edit. - An Update link, your username, a summary count and a comma-separated list similar to the following should result:
- You may replace that default comma-separated list view with a table view, sorted by category or namespace or last modify date ... indeed any number of variations.
- If you'd like a custom view then please read: semantic-mediawiki:Help:Introduction_to_Semantic_MediaWiki and specifically semantic-mediawiki:Help:Inline_queries
Go to Special:Widgets and find:
... then click the green (+) icon to add that widget (rendered in page here on the right) to your side bar.
- You may then drag that widget up or down to your preferred location in the sidebar.
- The Manage Favorites link within the Wiki Page widget in your sidebar can now be used for any page at the Virtual Skipper Wiki.
- If you do not want to access these advanced features then you do not need to have your user name in this category.
- Removing your user name will not affect your ability to contribute to articles or make forum posts and so on.
- Simply add comment delimiters before and after the following line at your user-page. viz.
<!-- {{:MediaWiki:Welcome-user-page/pushed messages}} -->
- You can rejoin this category and enable the Favorites facility at any time by restoring the above line at your user-page.
The target wiki must have enabled the extensions:
- Semantic mediawiki
- Semantic forms
- Required reading
- Template:Favorites
- Form:Favorites
- Category:Members#Manage_your_Favorites (this page)
- MediaWiki:Common.css "Semantic forms extension related"
- Possible applications
If all that is too intimidating then this solution is probably not for you ... yet! Given time, semantic mediawiki will become common place but for now, the learning curve and the scarce tutorials make this area a tricky minefield to navigate.
If you are already familiar with SMW and did take the time to review the above links then your feedback as to how this might have been better implemented is always welcome. Just use any of the talk pages for constructive criticism.
- Caveats
- Whenever a user adds or removes their name from an article's "list of fans" that is necessarily a page edit. This may be no big deal on a wiki such as this where the world-wide population of players is measured in the 20,000-40,000 range but it could be a serious issue at wiki's where the total available market is measured in the 2-4 million range. Typically the percentage of gamers who bother to register at a website for a game is significantly lower than 10%. So as the Virtual Skipper Wiki grows there might be 200-400 users in this category. Given those expected numbers this solution should not tax Wikia's servers too badly.
